About Ami
Ami is a ceramic designer maker, born and raised in the heart of the potteries Stoke-on- Trent. Pottery you could say, is in her blood. Ami’s parents were both figurine painters and worked at all of the well-known pottery factories. Her upbringing led to a future in ceramics, and so Ami graduated in 2006 with a Ceramic Design Degree from Staffordshire University.
She left the potteries behind in 2014 and relocated to Cornwall, where her studio is now based. Living by the sea and enjoying the wild landscape gives Ami the freedom to be expressive.
Creating Works Of Art Through Ceramics
Designing and creating decorative lighting and homeware to be enjoyed is Ami’s passion. The process involves finding vintage moulds and creating moulds from existing objects. Each piece is constructed from slip cast earthenware. Ami individually hand builds her creations by using slip cast parts from different moulds, deconstructing and reconstructing
them into unique lighting designs.
Inspiration
Inspiration is drawn from opulent furnishings of the 18th & 19th Century. The rich jewel like colours and décor of these periods are her palette to create with. Ornamentation is a key feature of Ami’s work. Birds are plentiful!
Ami’s glazes are reminiscent of Victorian majolica earthenware pottery made in the nineteenth century, with moulded surfaces and colourful clear lead glazes. By recreating impressions of the past and fusing the old with the new, she gives an overall contemporary feel to the work.
“The decorative past draws me, but the present leads me back again.” Ami Derbyshire
